Thank you Detroit Police Department

There are some bad cops but on the whole I feel that the Detroit Police Department is the best.

Look at the Fire Works where over a million people can go to the river front and enjoy the fireworks without worrying about their safety.  Our tricentennial parties had over a million celebrating safely.  Demonstrations can turn violent but not in Detroit, thanks to the Detroit Police Department. When we have controversial meeting the demonstrators come and the Detroit Police do not let things get out of hand.  I would like to see an annual new years celebration on the river front.  I think it could outdo Times Square in New York.  After all there ain't no party like a De-troit party.

I live in downtown Detroit and I love it.  I feel save and walk the streets with no fear.  I realize that anywhere you go there may be trouble but I do not worry when I am downtown.

It wasn't always that way but the changes in Detroit over the last 10 years have shown me that a city can go from worst to best if the people and the leaders work together.  The Police Department has changed too.  10 years ago I did not think much about the Department.  I saw a lot of bigoted cops and frankly I did not have  many good things to say about the cops.  Today it is different.  The Department has changed.  The officers have changed.

A city can not have a rebirth without the help of the Police Department.  Yes we still have crime problems but the police are doing their job and fighting crime.  We lost two excellent officers a couple of days before this was written.  The families wanted their privacy during their time of grief but they thought the public should be at the funeral so they allowed it to be televised.  I feel that the people of the city learned more about their police and I feel that the police and the people will work more closely together now.

I feel that Police Chief Ella M. Bully-Cummings  is going to make a big difference in the Department.  She can be strong when she needs to be and she can also show what is in her heart when that is needed.  I feel that she will listen to the people and that she will work well with those underneath her.

I also feel that the mayor will give the support needed to the chief.  The mayor has an understanding of the problems of the city and the need to work with the chief to keep the peace in the city.  Both the chief and the mayor realize that we all must work to help the young people steer away from the life that will send them to prison or their death.

I want to thank you Mayor Kilpatrick, Chief Bully-Cummings and all of the police officers in the Detroit Police Department for the job you are doing to make our city safe.  To all of the officers in the street I hope and pray that all of your shifts will be safe shifts.
